Types of braces
We offer a variety of orthodontic treatment options to suit every patient's needs and preferences:
Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are still the most common type of braces used by orthodontists. They consist of high-grade stainless steel and straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. Today's metal braces are more comfortable and fun than ever. You can even choose colored elastics to add a bit of personality to your braces during your treatment.
Ceramic Braces
Our clear, ceramic braces work the same way that traditional metal braces do, but their brackets are made with a clear ceramic material. They're a great option for achieving a brilliant, straight smile, and are popular among older teen and adult patients due to the discretion they offer. However, the brackets on clear braces can be larger and easier to break than metal brackets, so more care may be needed during your treatment.
Getting to know the process
When you choose Farnsworth Family Orthodontics, we want you to feel confident that you're receiving personalized, advanced care. We begin your treatment by collecting digital x-rays, photos, and models of your mouth to create a customized plan that addresses your specific orthodontic needs. We take into account the specific movements that each tooth needs to make in order to achieve the best positioning and will determine the optimal placement of your brackets.
After your braces are attached, we insert a wire that applies pressure to the teeth requiring movement. Through a process called remodeling, the wire gradually moves your teeth into their proper positions by encouraging precise tooth movements. This process also involves minor changes in the bone surrounding your teeth's roots. As your braces apply pressure to your teeth, cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around their roots. This works together with the wire to create negative pressure on one side of the tooth, where bone will be removed. On the other side of the tooth, the bone is reformed.
Since teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards their old positions over time, we recommend the regular use of a retainer after your braces are removed. This helps to prevent natural drifting and keep teeth in their new and improved positions.
